A clearer picture of the Aikyam experience.
These answers are based on Aikyam's published information about its Montessori philosophy, programs, environment and parent community. Where a detail depends on the individual child or current school arrangements, we recommend speaking with the school directly.
The Montessori Approach
01What is special about a Montessori classroom?
Aikyam describes its environment as an authentic Montessori setting with a carefully prepared environment, scientifically designed materials and trained adults. Children have access to materials, freedom of movement and opportunities to choose meaningful work within a prepared framework.
The environment also emphasizes beauty and harmony, responsibility, concentration, self-directed activity and social awareness.
What does “prepared environment” mean?
Aikyam describes the Montessori classroom as a prepared environment: a meaningfully structured space where everything has a purpose and a place. Furniture and materials are designed with children in mind, while resources are open and accessible to support curiosity, stability, movement and independent exploration.
Is Montessori learning completely child-led?
Children are given meaningful choice, but Montessori does not mean unlimited or unstructured activity. The choices available are shaped by the prepared environment and by materials and activities introduced by the educator. At the Elementary level, children can work with teachers to set learning goals and create personal work plans.
Why is independence so important in Montessori?
Aikyam's approach encourages children to become increasingly capable of caring for themselves, their work and their environment. Independence is connected with confidence, responsibility, self-reliance and a sense of ownership over learning.
What is meant by “Follow the child”?
It means observing the child carefully and responding to the child's developmental needs, interests and readiness rather than treating every child as though they learn in exactly the same way. Aikyam describes observation as central to understanding and facilitating each child's individual potential.
Classroom & Community
02Are Montessori classrooms mixed-age?
Yes. Aikyam's published Montessori information describes mixed-age groups as a core part of the approach. The multi-age community can give younger children opportunities to observe older peers and older children opportunities to become role models, while supporting cooperation and continuity in relationships.
How many children are typically in a Montessori class?
Aikyam's published FAQ states that Early Childhood and above may include around 20–30 students in a three-year age span, while toddler classes are typically smaller, around 10–15 children. Actual group sizes and arrangements can vary, so families should confirm the current configuration with Aikyam.
What role does the Montessori educator play?
The educator is more than a traditional lecturer. Aikyam describes its adults as trained guides who observe children, prepare the environment, introduce appropriate lessons and support children as they develop independence, concentration and responsibility.
How does Montessori support social development?
Children participate in a community where cooperation, respect, responsibility and awareness of others are part of everyday life. Mixed-age learning also gives children opportunities to learn from peers and contribute as role models.
Does Aikyam support parent involvement?
Aikyam states that it supports families through parent support, fellowship, skills training, seminars and workshops. It also describes one-on-one counselling sessions for parents as part of its broader family support approach.

Parents’ Practical Questions
06Do you have a play area?
In Montessori, the classroom itself is considered a prepared environment where children learn through purposeful movement and hands-on activities. We also provide opportunities for outdoor play and physical activities.
Do you provide van/transportation services?
We can provide transportation support depending on the route and availability. Parents can check with the school regarding their specific location.
Do you have observations?
Yes. Parent observations are an important part of Montessori. They allow parents to quietly observe how their child works, concentrates, interacts and becomes independent in the Montessori environment.
How long does a child take to settle?
Every child is different. Some children settle within a few days, while others may take a few weeks. We follow the child’s pace and provide a calm, consistent and supportive environment to help them settle comfortably.
What is Montessori?
Montessori is an educational approach developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. It focuses on the child’s natural development and encourages independence, concentration, coordination and self-discipline through hands-on learning in a prepared environment.
What is the difference between a traditional school and a Montessori school?
In a traditional classroom, learning is often teacher-directed and follows a common pace for the whole group.
In Montessori, the child has more freedom to choose purposeful work within clear boundaries. The teacher observes the child, gives individual presentations and supports the child’s development rather than constantly directing the entire class.
Will my child be ready to join a regular school by the age of 6?
Yes. Montessori prepares children not only academically but also socially, emotionally and practically. By around six years, children develop independence, concentration, communication skills, problem-solving abilities and a strong foundation in academics, which helps them transition confidently into different school environments.
Do you take children with special needs?
We believe every child deserves a respectful and supportive environment. Admissions are considered based on the individual child’s needs and the support we are able to provide. We discuss the child’s requirements with the parents before admission.
Do you have trained Montessori teachers?
Yes. Our teachers are trained in the Montessori approach and understand the principles of observation, presentation, independence and the prepared environment. We also believe in continuous learning and professional development.
What is the student-teacher ratio?
We maintain a low student-teacher ratio so that teachers can observe children closely and provide individual attention and guidance.
Do you provide CCTV access to parents?
CCTV is available for the safety and security of the children. However, continuous parent access to classroom CCTV may not be appropriate in a Montessori environment, as it can interfere with the child’s privacy and natural learning environment.
Do you have outings?
Yes. Outings and field trips are part of the children’s learning experience. They provide opportunities for children to connect what they learn in the classroom with the real world.
Do you conduct Annual Day celebrations?
Yes. We conduct celebrations and events that are meaningful to the children. Montessori encourages children to participate naturally rather than focusing only on performances or competition.
Do you conduct orientations?
Yes. Parent orientations help families understand the Montessori philosophy, the prepared environment, classroom practices and how they can support their child’s independence at home.
How frequently do you have parent-teacher meetings?
We have regular opportunities for communication with parents. Parent-teacher meetings are conducted twice a year to discuss the child’s development, progress, interests and areas where we can work together to support the child.
